Calling All Artists

The Arts Association of Oldham County’s Gallery 104 presents the Third Annual Poetic Justice interpreting the works of
Julia Alvarez and Langston Hughes.

Langston Hughes's poetry uses the rhythms of African American music, particularly blues and jazz. Called the Poet Laureate of the Negro Race, Langston Hughes' poetry is as relevant and fresh today as it was in the 1930's.

Ms Alvarez says of herself, "When I'm asked what made me into a writer, I point to the watershed experience of coming to this country. Not understanding the language, I had to pay close attention to each word -- great training for a writer."

Both these poets lend us perspective on what it means to be a person of color in America. Their voices add depth and beauty to the landscape of American literature.

As in previous years, the object of the Poetic Justice show is to interpret poetry through the visual arts. Read through the works of these poets, find a poem that resonates with you and create a work to reflect that resonance.

Also this year, I would like to invite local poets to share their work through readings at the opening night reception. Selected poems from those chosen will be printed and incorporated into the show.
